nesaw Mountain, June 27th.By the loth of July Johnston was in-trenched behind the defences of Atlanta,and the two armies were facing eachother with the Chattahoochee river be-tween them. Johnstons retreat hadbeen conducted with great skill, but hewas now superseded by Hood, July 17th,who was known as a fighting general.Hood at once proceeded to carry out theactive policy of the Confederate govern-ment, and assumed the offensive. Beforethe end of the month he had made threefurious assaults on fhe Union lines andwas repulsed in every one of them. The Federals, however, sustained aheavy loss in the death of General Mc-Pherson. At length, by fine mancEUver-ing, Sherman succeeded in gaining the END OF THE GREAT CIVII, WAR. fear of Atlantt., and cutting the supplyrailroads.
