Summary edit

Description
English: Granodiorite in the Devonian of Vermont, USA.

The rock seen here is at a New England quarry that targets decorative stone-quality material. It is a type of "gray granite" in the retail trade, but it's really granodiorite. It has less quartz than a true granite. This material is derived from the Barre Granite (Barre Pluton) of Vermont. The name is pronounced "berry". This igneous intrusion formed by partial melting of Silurian-Devonian sedimentary rocks that had been folded and regionally metamorphosed during the Acadian Orogeny in eastern America. The rocks here contain quartz, feldspar, and biotite mica.

Geologic unit: Barre Pluton (Barre Granite), New Hampshire Plutonic Series/Suite, Devonian, ~380 Ma

Locality: Rock of Ages Quarry, Graniteville, north-central Vermont, USA (44° 08’ 35.57” North latitude, 72° 28’ 49.78” West longitude)
