Title
English: Great Seattle Fire burning at waterfront, June 6, 1889
Description
English:

The Great Fire of June 6, 1889 was a significant turning point in Seattle's history and changed both the physical and political landscapes of the City. The fire started at 2:30 p.m. in a paint and woodwork shop at Front and Madison and over the course of the next 18 hours swept a southward across 100 acres of Seattle's business district and waterfront. The fire left little standing in its wake, consuming buildings, docks, wooden sidewalks, and anything else combustible. Losses from the conflagration were estimated at $20 million. In this image goods are piled on the dock while spectators watch the fire in progress near the Seattle, Lakeshore & Eastern Railway (SLS&E) depot. The SLS&E was first incorporated in 1885 to build a line from the Seattle harbor along Elliott Bay to the lumber and fishing town of Ballard.

The main Seattle, Lakeshore & Eastern terminal was in Smith Cove (see File:Anderson's 1890 map - 'North Seattle' to Smith Cove.jpg, detail from an 1890 map). This one (according to MOHAI librarian Adam Lyon, the first) was at the foot of Columbia Street. He says MOHAI is relying on the text at https://digitalcollections.lib.washington.edu/digital/collection/curtis/id/1201/rec/1 for this.
