| Inscription | Grenzstein zwischen Kurmainz und Hessen im Süd-Eichsfeld Der Stein stand bei Wendehausen (heute Unstrut-Hainich-Kreis) auf der Ländergrenze, zwischen Thüringen und Hessen. Das Eichsfeld gehörte seit dem Mittelalter ebenso wie Erfurt zu Kurmainz. Nach dem Wiener Kongress 1815 kam das südliche Eichsfeld zur preußischen Provinz Sachsen, Wendehausen wurde dabei dem Landkreis Mühlhausen zugeordnet. Das Mainzer Rad am Kopf des Steines wies auf die Hoheitsgrenze zwischen dem Kurfürstentum Hessen (Gemarkung Wanfried) sowie dem Kurfürsten- und Erzbistum Mainz hin. Nach 1945 verlief dort an der Gemarkungsgrenze von Wendehausen auch die innerdeutsche Grenze zwischen BRD und DDR, deren gemeinsame Grenzkommission die Grenzmarke durch einen damals offiziellen Staatsgrenzstein ersetzte. |
