English: Grim's Ditch, The Bake near Chilmark 1. The line of trees marks the line of an ancient earthwork, Grim's Ditch which crosses west Wiltshire roughly east to west. See 469839 for more details. The fields here are on a plateau on the chalk downland called The Bake that rises to 188m. This name may come from 'bake' land which in the late 19th century was land required by a tenancy agreement to be farmed on a five year shift with two crops of corn. There is a Bake Barn, 6km to the west near Chicklade Bottom, 465176. |
