of the public square, and thereused to be connected with it a pillory and a whipping-post, as late even as 1790. Lafayette College is situated on a beautiful eminenceoverlooking the town from the north. The view fromthis point is an excellent one; yet, as is true of all thehills about Easton, not more than one third of the towncan be seen from it. Bushkill Creek affords good water-powers, and it isto this that a great measure of the prosperity of the townis to be attributed. Over a dozen mills and distilleriesHe upon the banks of this creek within the limits of thetown. The distilleries consume about 250,000 bushelsof grain yearly, and send to market 900,000 gallons ofwhisky. The facilities of the borough for communication areexcellent and numerous. The Central Railroad of NewJersey has here its western terminus; the Morris Canalto New York, the Belvidere-Delaware Railroad and Del-aware Canal to Philadelphia, and the Lehigh Valley Roadand Lehigh Canal to Mauch Chunk, all centre here.

A novel featureabout it is that it has two stories: the upper one, whichis a passenger depot, on a level with the Central Rail-road of New Jersey, and the lower, a freight depot, ona level with the Belvidere-Delaware Railroad. Abouthalf a mile farther up in the town the two roads meeton a common level. From the passenger depot just re-ferred to the view of Easton is probably as good as canbe obtained. To the right, but hidden from us by hills,is Phillipsburg, on the New Jersey side of the Delaware;directly opposite is Mount Lafayette, with the college;farther to the left is Mount Jefferson, upon which is theold cemetery in which Squire Parsons, the patron of thetown, is buried; at the foot, along the sides, and overthe summits of these hills reaches the thriving town it-self, with its busy manufactories, bu
