e Albergo dei Poveri, be-yond the Porta Carbonara, foundedin 1654, is a fine building devotedto the welfare of the poor, andaccommodating about 1300 inmates.Provision is also made for the out-door relief of others. Girls whomarry out of the institution receivea dowry. The Ospedale di Pammatone,on the promenade of the Acquasola,has usually 1000 patients and 3000orphans ; it contains also an insti-tution for the deaf and dumb. Infront of it is a bronze statuerepresenting the boy BattistinoBalilla, who threw the first stoneat the Austrian soldiers in 1746. Beyond the Porta Romana is aHospital for the Insa,ne, containing,on an average, 700 patients. There are in Genoa 15 establish-ments for women, called Conserva-torie. Some of them are refuges forsingle women; others are peni-tentiaries ; others are schools;others, again, are asylums fororphan or deserted children. Of the Theatres, the TeatroCarlo Felice is the first. It ranksnext in size to the Scala at Milanand the San Carlo at Naples.

The Villetta di Negro,on a mound which rises near it,commands a charming view. It isascended on foot by winding paths,and the building itself has beenconverted into a museum. Thereare several other public gardens. Near the railway station is aMonument to Columbus, erected in1862. At the corners of the squarepediment are figures of Religion,Geography, Force, and Wisdom ;above is a circular pedestal, adornedwith prows of ships, surmounted bymarble figures representing Colum-bus and the kneeling figure ofAmerica.
