Summary edit

Description
English: The H. J. Lee House, 322 East Commerce Street at East Street, Milford, Michigan, December 2020. A contributing property to the NRHP-listed North Milford Village Historic District, this house was built in 1906 of textured concrete blocks, a then-recent innovation in building materials technology that would undoubtedly have stood out amongst its neighbors. However, leaving that aside, the architecture of the house was very much typical of its era: an American Foursquare design with a moderately pitched hipped roof whose widely overhanging eaves and brackets suggest a Craftsman influence, and whose front porch features a raking dentil row on the pediment and a hip roof to match that of the house itself. Original owner Harvey J. Lee (1864-1914) got his start as a hardware store owner, but by the time of the house's construction he had diversified into a wide-ranging gamut of business interests in which he was an investor, from a locally-based wire basket factory to lumber plantations in Central America.
