Description

A model of the Colossus Class Battleship HMS Gloucester at the Glasgow Transport Museum, 2 March 2007.

The completion of HMS Dreadnought in 1906 revolutionised battleship design and rendered all previous battleships (and some yet to be built!) obsolete. The subsequent Dreadnought-type designs were a gradual progression through the Bellerophon (1906), St. Vincent (1910), Neptune (1911) and finally the Colossus (1911) Classes before there was another leap in battleship design with the Orion Class Super-Dreadnoughts of 1912.

Designed by Sir Philip Watts, two Colossus Class ships were launched in 1910 and completed in 1911, Colossus being built by Scotts Shipbuilding, Greenock and sister Hercules by Palmers Shipbuilding, Jarrow. They had 25,000 shp coal-fired direct-drive turbine engines in three engine rooms (the first British battleships to have three), 4 screws and a maximum speed of 21 kts (21.6 kts on trials), measured 546 ft x 86 ft x 27 ft and had a displacement of 21,030 tons. They were armed with 10x12” (5x2), 16x4” (16x1), 4x3 pdrs (4x1) guns and 3 (later 2) x18” TT (fixed singles). 2x3” AA guns were added in WWI.

Both ships fought in the Battle of Jutland 1916, firing on the light cruiser SMS Weisbaden and various destroyers with indeterminate results and then the battlecruisers SMS Derfflinger and SMS Seydlitz. The Colossus scored at least four, but probably five, hits on the Derfflinger. However, the Colossus was in turn hit twice by Seidlitz and suffered two damaging near misses. Then an oncoming torpedo forced her to turn away out of the battle line and she saw no further action. Fortunately, the damage was not major and quickly repaired by the dockyard. After WWI the Colossus was converted to a training ship in 1921 and was broken up in 1928. The Hercules was broken up in 1922.
