Summary edit

Description
English: Shot into space at stern of HMS Gannet (1878). The ship's sterncastle comprising the Captain's cabin is immediately above this space and part of the stern compartment from which the shot was taken. The circular tube seen to the right was used for lifting the propeller out of the water when the ship was under sail and not using steam propulsion. The captain shared his cabin with the hoisting crane.
