DescriptionHNS-1 over USS Midway (CVB-41) in Arctic waters 1946.jpg | A U.S. Coast Guard Sikorsky HNS-1 helicopter hovers above the U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Midway (CVB-41) in Arctic waters during "Operation Frostbite". On 1 March 1946, Task Group 21.11, consisting of Midway, the destroyers USS Stormes (DD-780), USS Vogelgesang (DD-862) and USS Charles R. Ware (DD-865) and a fleet oiler left Norfolk, Virginia to conduct cold weather tests in Davis Strait between Greenland and Baffin Island. Between 7 and 22 March, TG 21.11 conducted flight operations with operational aircraft and new types. |
