Summary edit

Description
English: Haddlesey Old Lock, River Aire, Yorkshire, near Chapel Haddlesey, North Yorkshire, England.
The lower Aire between Haddlesey and the junction with the Ouse at Airmyn was once navigable as part of the through route from Hull and Goole to Leeds. The section was always difficult, with many bends and shoals, so it was not surprising that, with the opening of the Aire and Calder Canal, and especially the Selby Canal from Haddlesey to the Ouse at Selby, that the lower Aire fell into disuse, and with it this lock at Chapel Haddlesey. Although the lock was used for some time by maintenance boats to access the back of Haddlesey Weir, it eventually fell into ruin as is seen in this 1974 photograph. I understand that the remains of the lock have now been removed. Note that this lock should not be confused with Haddlesey Flood Lock on the Selby Canal, about a mile to the west.
