Notes
  • Significance: Technologically and architecturally, Hale O Pi' Ilani is unique in all of the Pacific. The curvature and terracing of the massive north wall, which rises over 13 meters high, is an impressive aesthetic achievement as well as a remarkable feat of engineering. When viewed from a distance, the massive terracing of the north-eastern corner and its prominence as it sits on top of the two lava ridges suggest that this structure was constructed to remind the Hawaiian people of their ruling chief and his sacred power.
