Der Gedenkstein am ehemaligen Jüdischen Friedhof
Dieser Gedenkstein nennt die Namen der aus Haltern am See stammenden jüdischen Bürgerinnen und Bürger, die in Konzentrationslager der NS-Gewaltherrschaft deportiert wurden. Er enthält nicht nur die Namen der von hier aus Deportierten, sondern auch von den Opfern, die zuvor von Haltern in Nachbarstädte gezogen sind und von den Nazis dann vertrieben worden sind. Von den Verschleppten überlebte nur Alexander Lebenstein aus Richmond (USA), der an dieser Stelle für seine Eltern und andere verfolgte, vertriebene und ermordete jüdische Bürgerinnen und Bürger betete. (siehe Gebetsspruch) // Der Anstoß für den Gedenkstein, der am Vorabend des Holocaust-Gedenktages im Januar 1997 aufgestellt wurde, kam von den Schülerinnen und Schülern der Hans-Böckler-Kollegschule. Auf ihre Bitte hatte Alexander Lebenstein, inzwischen US-Staatsbürger, seinen Geburtsort erstmals wieder im November 1995 besucht. Seitdem verstärkten sich die Kontakte. Vor allem zur Städtischen Realschule entstanden viele freundschaftliche und persönliche Beziehungen. Im Juni 2007 beschloss der Stadtrat, die Schule nach Alexander Lebenstein zu benennen. Dem Namensgeber selbst wurde bei seinem Besuch am 4. Juni 2008, eineinhalb Jahre vor seinem Tod am 28. Januar 2010, die Ehrenbürgerschaft für sein Versöhnungswerk und sein Engagement für die jungen Menschen verliehen. // Dieser Gedenkstein soll uns Erinnerung und Mahnung zu Toleranz und Menschlichkeit sein.
