ngs, beneath thefoliage of the herbe benedicta with its bunches of berriesare winged monsters (Broivne). On the west portion of the N.W. pier, the capital isfoliated with the vine and has a bird pecking at the grapes. On the west pier, in south transept is a canopied nicheprobably occupied by a figure of the Virgin ; below was achest or red ark for donations. The lantern is ascended by a staircase in the S.W.corner of the south transept which leads to the turret;from there a walk along the parapet conducts to the stairsin the lantern. The total number of steps to Summit. ^ summit is 273. If the atmosphere is clear anextensive view is obtained of the City and Valeof York. On this platform William Smith the father ofEnglish Geology stood in 1794, and looking eastward could,see that the hills (the Wolds) by their contour, containedchalk. Towards the north is a low range known as theHowardian Hills (lias) ; the Vale of Derwent ; and thebolder Hambleton Range (oolites) with the White Horse

THE ORGAN SCREEN. 125 cut on the side of Whitestone Cliff. On the emnience tothe east stands Crayke Castle. Continuous with the HambletonRange are the Cleveland Hills (oolites) which stretch r.orth-wards nearly to the Tees, and eastward to the sea. Thevale at York is about 20 miles wide. It consists of triascovered with a considerable thickness of glacial drift. Severushill in the foreground is glacial, and used as the reservoir ofthe York Water Company. To the west the pahezoic rocksare fringed at their base by permian strata. Ahnes Cliff (760feet) near Harrogate being conspicuous. To the south, SelbyAbbey may be observed, and the two eminences near areHambleton Haugh and Brayton Barf. THE ORGAN SCREEN. (1475-1505). Architectural Style—Perpendicular.
