Caption bottom right:  [S. George of Cornwall] in an eighteenth-century hand

Watermark bottom right: crowned shield incorporating a bird and cross (Briquet 1255)
Notes Black and coloured chalks, pen and brush and Indian ink on pink-primed paper. The portrait is of the head and shoulders in profile to the left. Retouched by a later hand along the lines indicating garments. The drawing is clearly related to Holbein's roundel oil painting of Simon George at Frankfurt, but this is the only case in Holbein's work where the painting does not closely follow the drawing, since the proportions and some details are different.
