DescriptionHarbor House - fmr Scheu's Hall, Standard Brands warehouse, Anthone Furniture warehouse - Buffalo, New York - 20200723.jpg |
English: As seen in July 2020: the weathered but still handsome three-story Italianate building at 241 Genesee Street, Buffalo, New York boasts a façade that's practically a guidebook to 19th-century windows: the heavily altered storefront ones on the bottom floor contrast with the baskethandle arches crowning those on the second floor and the round-arched ones on the third floor, in each of the latter cases topped with decorative keystone voussoirs. Handsome as well are the twin dentil courses just underneath the roofline, matched by the dentillation underlying the bracketed cornice on the front gable. Constructed in 1878 by landowner William Scheu, the building initially served as rentable meeting space for a number of different organizations: the Ancient Order of United Workmen, the International Order of Odd Fellows, and the Unknown Social Club all convened here at one time or another. Bethel Baptist Church also met here for the first nine months of its existence, before constructing their permanent home on Johnson Street. "Scheu's Hall" continued in its original function well into the 1910s; subsequent tenants include Standard Brands, a wholesale grocery concern that occupied the building from 1930 until the late 1940s; Anthone Furniture, who used it as a warehouse from c. 1953 until 1991, and Jasmine, an upscale nightclub that occupied the space very briefly in the early 1990s. Today it's Harbor House, a drop-in center for homeless adults dealing with mental illness and addiction. |
