DescriptionHardley Staithe - geograph.org.uk - 1445568.jpg |
English: Hardley Staithe. Many villages in the Broads are situated at the edge of the river marshes, slightly above the water level where they were safe from flooding. A channel was often dug to connect village and river, thus creating a village staithe to which goods such as timber, bricks or fuel could be brought by boat. A hundred years ago many of these villages were much easier accessible by boat than by road. Hardley Dyke is very straight, the present channel having been cut sometime between 1810 and 1840, replacing an older, winding channel situated a few metres to the east. There is no trace of it today. Up until about 150 years ago there used to be several cottages with barns and outhouses by the end of the staithe, one being the warehouse of a coal merchant, the other a public house called Staith House. Large farm sheds > 1445559 adjoin the staithe nowadays. |
