heamateur. Tell me the name of yourcollaborator, as I should like to treatwith him personally. Why, then, my dear sir, replied theother, you must see Mile. Rosa Bo-nheur herself. The client then sought out Rosa Bo-nheur. But the great artist in her turnmade objections. I am not the authorof the work; I have painted only thebull. The woman is by M. Dubufe. Tocut the story short, the painting wassold for 15,000 francs, of which seventhousand were for the bull and eightthousand for the portrait of Rosa Bo-nheur. It was by way of gallantry tothe lady, observed M. Dubufe, be-cause the bull was worth vastly more. This story is told in detail in theRevue Anecdotique, which was apt tobe well informed of those petits faits sodear to Stendhal. I knew Rosa Bonheur only in her res-idence at By, where I had been intro-duced by my friend Georges Cain, theamiable Director of the Musee Carna-valet, whom Rosa highly esteemed. She was the Providence of the vicinityand lived very retired and very happy.

Vol. CIV—No. 619.-14 Copyright, igoi, by Anna E. Klumpke Young Wild-Boar In a biography of Rosa Bonheur, whichdates from 1850, I find a description ofher atelier prior to her departure for theforest. She resided then in Rue dArras, not far from Michelet and the studio ofOld Rude. A cottage in a small garden;a dining-room on the ground-floor, andthree modest bed-rooms; on the first floor, the atelier, tastefully furnished withpanoplies of arms on the walls revealingthe artist, a monkey, some other animals, paintings, and manikins—such was thehome. Rosa Bonheur sequestered herselfhere, receiving only on Fridays. Fromsix in the morning until nightfall, andthen by lamp - light till midnight, shepainted and designed. While at workshe usually got a friend to read to hersome philosophical work, or perhaps aromance like Lelia or Les Champs; or,again, she would ask for music. She was in effect charmingly simpleand always natural. She lived, likeGeorge Sand, a child of nature, a beingall modes
