Description

Hatchment on the south wall of the Nave, Hexham Abbey, Northumberland. Four hatchments on the south wall of the Nave bear the arms of the Sparke and Clarke families. Sloughter Clarke was Lecturer from 1766 to 1801; Robert Clarke was Lecturer from 1801 to 1824. This is the hatchment nearest to the Crossing. (Source: Hexham Abbey Guide, p24). Arms: Quarterly of 4:

  • 1&4: Quarterly sable and gules, an eagle displayed argent on a chief or three martlets of the second
  • 2&3: Gules, three ducks/geese argent

With inescutcheon of pretence of Gules, on a bend argent three mullets azure (Shafto of Little Bavington, Northumberland (See pedigree, A history of Northumberland. issued under the direction of the Northumberland county history committee by Northumberland county history committee;Vol.4, p.417[1])).

This one displays inescutcheon of pretence of Gules, on a bend argent three mullets azure (Shafto, but the senior line bore a chevron not a bend), indicating that the deceased married an heiress daughter of the Shafto family. Another of the Shafto heiress (or co-heiress) daughters was the wife of Rev. Robert Clarke (1772-1824), MA, Mercers' Lecturer of Hexham Abbey 1801–1824, buried in the Crypt of Hexham Abbey, whose hatchment there also shows an inescutcheon of pretence of Gules, on a bend argent three mullets azure; memorial in N Transept. Rev. Robert Clarke (1772-1824) married Martha Shafto, heiress of the Shafto family of Carrycoats Hall, Wark on Tyne. (Source: https://www.hexhamabbey.org.uk/heritage/Calm/HEXAB3059.html)
