Photograph of a Havasupai Indian woman, Chickapanagie's wife, baking "Meala" bread, ca.1900. The traditional bread is made from corn meal wrapped in husks and then baked in hot coals. She kneals on a slight slope wrapped in a brightly patterned cloth or blanket with her back to the camera. A large pan holds the heat of the coals in a depression in the ground in front of her.A forest is visible in the background.
