| Description |
Marble head of Alexander the Great, created in Egypt about 300 to 200 BC. Found at Alexandria. In 332 BC, Macedonian ruler Alexander the Great conquered Egypt. Following Alexander's death in Babylon in 323 BC, his generals divided his empire among themselves. Ptolemy, one of Alexander's closest companions, became pharoah of Egypt. Ptolemaic Egypt adopted many Hellenistic elements, including artistic styles, and began working in marble. This head of Alexander is from the time of Ptolemy I or Ptolemy II, and was part of a larger statue. |
