Summary
editDescriptionHeather (Bonny Bl***ing) - geograph.org.uk - 31279.jpg |
English: Heather (Bonny Bl***ing) If you are going to visit Creag nam Mial, you are going to have to get up close and personal with heather, heather in all its steel wire stumbling glory. There are three species native to Britain, and two of them are shown here. The flowering plant is Bell Heather (Erica cinerea), aptly named as the seed heads rattle and ring as you walk through it. Close to flowering, is the commonest heather, the one that gives walkers and orienteers real grief, Calluna vulgaris. Two weeks after this picture was taken the moors will be brightly coloured and sweet smelling.
The third heather species is cross leafed heath, Erica tetralix, this can be found in bogs and wet ground, like bell heather it flowers earlier than the common heather. |
