Summary edit

Description
English: A low-pressure system over northern Africa swept dust over the eastern Mediterranean country of Cyprus several times in mid-April 2024, darkening skies and reducing air quality. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's Terra satellite acquired this true-color image of a shroud of tan over the Cyprus on April 22. Despite the large quantity of dust visible over the island, especially in the west, this dust storm was less severe than the previous pulse of dust which arrived on April 18. At 9:00 a.m. on that date, the Department of Labour Inspection reported that the latest hourly dust concentration reached 139.3 μg/m3 in Paphos, 89.9 μg/m3 in Limassol, and 67.3 μg/m3 in Zygi. “Dust” refers to respirable particulate matter with a diameter smaller than 10 μg (PM10). The government’s notice also stated, “According to the relevant legislation, a limit value not to be exceeded is set for the daily average concentrations at 50 μg/m3 (micrograms per cubic meter).” Dust is expected to continue to cross the Mediterranean, impacting both Cyprus and Greece with heavy dust over the next several days.
