1632 or 1(>:J8; 15(58â1025 No. 5âMADONNA AND CHILD WITH ANGELS (Panel) Height, l01/> indies; length, 13 inches The landscape, painted by Jan Brueghel, presents intones of green and bine a sylvan glade, bordered on theright by water, which extends to a woody bank, sur-mounted by blue hills. Against the water appear twored-breasted birds, perched on twigs in the foreground,while a third is similarly depicted on the left of the com-position beside a leafy bank. Under the shelter of fol-iage in the center sits the Virgin, clad in a rosy robewith a blue drapery across her lap. On this stands theChild, turning with eager hands toward a dish of fruit,offered by an angel kneeling at the left. The latter isfancifully attired in a yellow silk gown, fluttering abovea red skirt. Another angel kneels behind her. The headsof Madonna and Child are distinguished by nimbi of suf-fused glory; and flowers, dear to the Virginâforget-me-nots, pink and white rosesâlie scattered at her feet.

The sky is over-cast with dark gray stormy clouds. The Magdalen, robedin white, kneels with her arms around the Saviours cross,holding a dove-gray drapery that descends over the lowerpart of her figure.
