Summary edit
DescriptionHenry Hird's - geograph.org.uk - 1190619.jpg |
English: Henry Hird's Jeweller's shop at No.270 Hessle Road, Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. Established in 1852 and still going strong. Goldsmiths such as Henry Hird did well out of the fish trade because many people claimed it was bad luck to go back to sea with money in your pocket. During fishing's boom years it wasn't unusual to see the tattooed fishermen and their wives heading for a night out in West Hull's pubs with gold rings on every finger and a bunch of gold chains around their necks. Hull's fishing industry effectively died with the closure of St. Andrew's Dock in 1975. |
