Français : La peinture représente une première partie de la légende d'Hermès, le dieu grec du commerce et des voyageurs, au moment où il fabrique le caducée, un de ses attributs et symbole du commerce, à partir d'une branche d'olivier. La scène semble se dérouler en France comme le laissent croire les personnages accompagnés d'iris (fleurs de lys), symbole de la royauté française, et d'une représentation miniature de la cathédrale Notre-Dame-de-Paris.
