Summary edit

Description

An old building at Highland Beach.

Highland Beach in Anne Arundel County Maryland was the first incorporated African American municipality in Maryland. It was founded by Frederick Douglass's son Charles Douglass and his wife Laura in 1893. Charles built two homes on the 40 acres; one was designed by and for Frederick but he died before completion. This home "Twin Oaks" was later turned into the Frederick Douglass Museum and Cultural Center. The Museum received a Heritage Fund grant from Preservation Maryland in 2017.
