Description
English: Dr Helen Taylor collecting semen from a male hihi at Zealandia EcoSanctuary as part of a larger project investigating links between inbreeding and male fertility in birds. Semen is collected via cloacal massage, a non-invasive procedure where the cloacal protuberance (the area around the cloaca that become swollen in male passerines during the breeding season) is gently squeezed to cause semen to pool on the surface. Semen can then be collected with a capillary tube as show and used for analysis of sperm quality.
