Text Appearing Before Image:
niroud Central Saloon (published in 1886),p. 74, no. 44. There may be nothing mathematical about thenumbers given at the beginning of each line, but it shows theliking of the Babylonians for such things. How far they carriedtheir liking for numbers and mystic calculations we have yet tolearn, but Prof. Hilprechts Vol. XX, has shown us much con-cerning their attainments as mathematicians. For this, and forall his other important work in the domain of Assyriology hedeserves the thanks of every student, and, personally, he hasmine most cordially. * In both cases the numeral should be written with the groups 5.45.36,but the scribe wrote the 3 tens of 36 over the 5 vertical wedges of 45, hencethe confusion in each third group. 78 HILPRECHT ANNIVERSARY VOLUME (8 And with this I end this trille, which I dedicate to Prof.HiLPRECIIT, who, in realit), may be regarded as being ahTiostas much its author as I am, for without his work I should nothave been able to write a single word worth reading.
Text Appearing After Image:
The Origin of the Greek Lamp. The figures and s)-mbols with which the Babylonian Boundary-Stones are adorned have given rise to much speculation. The majority of Assyriologists were disposed to see in them thesigns of the Zodiac and other stellar emblems, and their astro-nomical significance still has its advocates. One of the Boun-dary-Stones discovered by M. DE Morgan at SUSA, however, has now settled what was, at any rate, their primary intention.*They represented the shrines, weapons and sacred animals ofthe gods under whose protection the Boundary-Stone was placed. If they had any astronomical reference, it was altogether of asecondary kind.*
