FAMILLE DES PII ASCOLOMYDÉS. 267 fiuq doigts sont armés d'ongles propres à fouir; le pouce de leurs pieds do^ derrière n'est point'opposable, et le second et le troisième de leurs orteils no sont ni grêles, m reunis sous la peau, comme chez les Syndaetyles dont nous parlerons ensuite. FAMILLE des PHASCOLOMYDÉS GFNiiu P1RSCOLOME (Phnsvolomtja, E. Geoffr.). Outre les caractères que nous vouons de signaler, le genre des Phascolomes se distingue encore par ses formes trapues, par sa loto large, par son corps épais et dépourvu de queue, et par ses - molaires, dont la première pour chaque mâchoire est plus petite que les autres. Ces Animaux sont fouisseurs; ils mangent des substances végétales, principalement des 'Teur" caractère est doux, et la facilité avec laquelle ou peut le nourrir a fait penser à quelques naturalistes qu'on pourrait les rendre domestiques. On les rencontre a la Nouvelle Hollande et en Tasmanie. L'unique espèce qu'on en ait distinguée jusque dans ces derniers temps a .1 aboul signalée par le voyageur anglais Flinders. et bientôt après par Pérou et Lesueur. "c'est le Phascolomk wombat (Phascolomys wombat).

Ces deux nouvelles espèces sont fondées sur lexa- men des exemplaires pris à la Nouvelle-Hollande ; le vrai Wombat est de la Tasmame.
