Notes
  • Significance: Intellectual center for Nantucket, originally built in 1825, it was rebuilt after the fire of 1846 with further embellishments to its Greek Revival design. The Nantucket Atheneum was erected in 1847 on the site of an earlier library which had been destroyed in the fire of 1846. It was built in Greek Revival style with matched siding corner pilasters and Ionic columns in antis probably by Frederick Brown Coleman, designer-builder of many of Nantucket's larger contemporary buildings. The Atheneum provided a large lecture hall as well as library facilities for the island.
