Description
English: Odisha is an eastern state of India. It has been home to ancient kingdoms and events that shaped India and Asia in general. This is where pre-Maurayan era city-forts are found – among the oldest in the world. Later Emperor Ashoka led a violent invasion here against the Kalinga empire, a war whose scale of death and destruction led him to adopt and spread Buddhism beyond ancient India. Some of the earliest evidence of murals and inscriptions in India are also found here.

Odisha was a key region which helped the development and spread of early Jainism, Shaivism and Vajrayana Buddhism. The hills of Eastern Ghats in Odisha have ruins of numerous Buddhist monasteries and lost historic universities. Odisha is also home to some of the oldest and largest Hindu temples in eastern parts of India, as well as co-located Jain monuments. Almost all monuments show signs of natural erosion as well as deliberate destruction and vandalism after the 12th century. The surviving monuments and the ruins found in Odisha have been dated between the 400 BCE and 1780 CE.
