An eloquent summary of the qualitiesof this distinguished man was given by Dr.Comegys before a medical convention in Cin-cinnati, wherein he said in conclusion : Nothing seemed to escape him for theadornment of the city and the comfort of thepeople. The line of elm trees on the southside of Washington Park were planted underhis own direction over sixty years ago. k 1 He was a voluminous writer on profes-sional and general topics, but the work withwhich he crowned his lifes labor was his Systematic Treatise on the Diseases of theInterior Valley of North America, to whichhe devoted more than twenty years of travelthroughout the vast Mississippi Valley. Itwas, so to speak, 4 dug out of the very ele-ments of the continent and society of Amer-ica. It is a great work of absolutely orig-inal research in medical topography, andwill always remain a monument to his famethat has no parallel in the science and liter-ature of medicine.

DR. DANIEL DRAKE. Though Drake has long been dead, yetall of his great undertakings remain and areflourishing. The Cincinnati College is the largeLaw School of the Ohio Valley ; the MedicalCollege of Ohio, now a Medical Departmentof the University of Cincinnati, was never soprosperous; the Clinical and PathologicalSchool of the Hospital is attended by fourhundred students. It has a large and grow-ing library and museum, and is now under-taking to establish a pathological laboratoryfor original research. The beautiful elm treesare now as verdant as ever. The wonderful activity of Drakes mind,which led him to undertake the most severeprofessional labors and throw himself besidesinto every struggle for the advancement ofthe interest of society, is readily explainedwhen we consider the philosophic spirit which HAMILTON COUNTY. animated his mind ; for he was possessed ofthat gift of genius which sees beyond all thetapparent # disparity of phenomena ; thatsevere unity, after which all true
