Summary edit

Description
English: Built in 1889, this Richardsonian Romanesque Revival-style building was designed by Joseph W. Yost to serve as the jail and Sheriff’s residence for Licking County, Ohio. The building features a rusticated brownstone exterior with limestone trim, a hipped roof with copper cresting and gutters, one-over-one windows, arched window openings, pilasters with decorative capitals, a stone cornice with dentils, cylindrical towers at the northeast and southeast corners of the building and in the middle of the north facade, with conical roofs on the northern towers, entry porches with shed roofs, stone lintels, and stone pilasters and columns, two-story bays on the north and south facades of the rear wing with limestone spandrels, semi-circular three-story bay windows on the front (west) and side (south) facades, a red brick penthouse on the roof, and a rear gable with an oxeye window. The building served as the Licking County Jail until 1987, when a more modern facility opened elsewhere in Newark. Since closing, the old jail has served as various government offices, and is presently a museum and seasonal haunted house attraction operated by the Licking County Preservation Society. The building is a contributing structure in the Newark Downtown Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.
