Many of the chiefs, and lessthinking old men, even affirm and beheve, that this is the spot in which their ancestorshave Uved since the world was new. It is only by a study of their varied andnumerous fable-hke traditions, that I can trace them as coming from an easterlydirection, prior to their residence on the island of Lapointe. With the same progressive advance they have been making for two hundred yearspast, it has taken this tribe eight hundred years, from the time they left the easternsear-board of the Atlantic, to assume their present local position on this continent.This time and progress, however, are only assumed, as they may have been driven westto Lake Superior, with much more celerity than they have advanced, since ouracquaintance with them as a tribe.
