stern side of the grounds,and a continuous road, forty feet wide, be graded and runthrough the middle ravine, connecting with the frontgrounds. The gate-house has already been built at theeastern side. About 65 acres have been laid out in burial lots, andanother 50 acres will be ready for use during this comingsummer. That already in use has been rapidly taken up,and with its many handsome monuments, presents quite apleasing and interesting prospect. No fences are allowedaround the lots, marble corner-posts, on a level with thesod, alone marking the boundaries, thus securing not onlyuniformity over the ground, but allowing them to be keptin better order than they otherwise could be. In the front part of the grounds can be noticed thecircular plots of the Masonic order, Independent Order ofOddfellows, and St. Andrews Society; while the manyprivate plots, scattered here and there, recall the namesof well-known people who, within a few years past, wereactive in the busy life of the City.

I HISTORICAL SKETCH. The rapid growth of the City, especially to the westward,induced the Trustees, some three years ago, to take steps tosecure additional land in this direction, which resulted in thepurchase of the property now known as The ProspectCemetery, on the 13th December, 1887. Up to the time ofthe Trust taking possession, it was used as farm lands, andextensive alterations and improvements had to be made torender it suitable for the purposes for which it was purchased It is situated on St. Clair Avenue—immediately to thenorth of the Davenport Koad—and overlooking one of themost picturesque valleys in the vicinity of Toronto. Lookingsouthward and westward from the rising ground in the Ceme-tery, the Lake for miles can be seen, and the valley of theHumber, with an immense extent of beautifully wooded landextending away to the distant horizon, dotted here and therewith scattered villages and towns.
