The Renfrew Manufacturing Company hadits beginning in the purchase of William Pol-lock & Company, who operated the StoneMill, known as the Broadley Mill, which wasbuilt in 1845 by William Pollock, of Pitts-field. The firm of William Pollock & Com-pany was composed of William Pollock,James Renfrew and James C. Chalmers. William Pollock & Company had alsopurchased property and started the founda-tion of a mill on the w^est side of the HoosacRiver, adjoining the tracks of the Boston &Albany Railroad, which is now the mainproperty of the Renfrew Manufacturing Com-pany at Adams, Mass. This was also part ofthe purchase of the Renfrew Company al-ready referred to. In conjunction with these mills, the Ren-frew^ people also operated a spinning mill atDalton, Mass., for a number of years. 360 HISTORY OF AMERICAN TEXTILES.

In 1881, the colored damask business wasstarted by the building of the Jacquard Mill,near the center of Adams, the Turkey RedDye House, on Dean street, and the spinningmill at Maple Grove In recent years theCompany has sold the Dalton, Dean streetand Broadley Mill properties, so that now itis running the three main properties, knownas the Main Property, the Jacquard Mill andthe Maple Grove Mill. The present equipment consists of 1992looms and 36,000 spindles with dye houseand finishing w^orks making colored andbleach table damask and table cloths, ging-hams, madras and colored w^ash goods andalso colored and grey yarns. A force ofI 300 workers is required to produce the out-put of Renfrew^ goods demanded by thetrade.
