Text Appearing After Image:
LAPPET MADE BY THE LATE MRS. TREADWIN, OF EXETER. 1864. To face page 412, TROLLY LACE 413 pillow. The origin of Trolly was undoubtedly Flemish, but it is said to have reached Devonshire at the time of theFrench Eevolution, through the Normandy peasants, drivenby want of employment from their own country, where lacewas a great industry during the eighteenth century. Theorigin of trolly is from the Flemish Trolle Kant, wherethe design was outlined with a thick thread, or, possibly, itmay be derived from a corruption of the French toiU, appliedto distinguish a flat linen pattern from the ground or treille,a general term for a net ground. It is now almost extinctin Devonshire, remaining in the hands of the midlandcounties,^^ where it more properly belongs.^*^ Trolly lace was not the work of women alone. In theflourishing days of its manufacture, every boy, until he hadattained the age of fifteen, and was competent to work inthe fields, attended the lace schools daily. ^ A lace-maker of Sid
