s soon as they were near enough our four guns opened fireupon them with double-shotted canister, and never did guns fire morerapidly; still onward came the enemy, closing up the fearful gaps made byour canister—still they come almost up to the muzzles of our guns, whentheir line breaks and back they go—no mortal man could continue toface such a storm of canister—back down the hill and into the woods theygo. Again they form, and again the fearful rebel yell, as up the hill theycome, almost as far as they came before, when they again break and retire;they then attempt the charge the third time, but only get a part of thedistance when they retire and the firing and fighting seems to lessen. The comrades were cool and deliberate, and watched the effect of theirfiring as calmly as though at target practice.
