Hewas admitted to practice in all the courtsof Kentucky and entered the law office ofJames B. Beck, afterwards United States sen-ator, at Lexington. Mr. Graves came to California in 1878, andlocated at San Francisco. He has since beenengaged in the practice of his profession. In 1882 he was married to Maude, onlychild of Jefferson G. James, a Californiapioneer, and is the father of three boys, whosenames are. Jefferson James, Walker Coleman,and Rector Chiles.. In 1888 he was appointed special assistantdistrict attorney, and as such, he had chargeof many important cases involving jury brib-ery, embezzlement of public funds, violation ofelection laws. etc. In nearly all of these hesecured convictions. Of the numerous appeals in cases triedby him, he was successful in all except one,and the reversal in that case was securedon purely jurisdictional grounds. In 1890 ^Ir. Graves was nominated for theoffice of attorney-general by the Democraticparty but went down in the general cataclysmthat overtook his party in that year. Since leaving the district attorneys c-fficeMr. Graves has confined himself almost en-tirely to civil cases. He has been conneitedwith some of the most important land andwater suits in the State. He is past worshipful master of PacificLodge, No. 136, of Free and Accepted Ma-sons, and is past grand chancellor of the orderof Knights of Pythias.
