Notes
  • Significance: Construction began 1858, completed 1860, and dedicated March 21, 1860. Financed by contributions and fund raising festivals, etc. Renewed in 1884 and rededicated February 19, 1885. Gain repaired in 1885 and 1903. Use discontinued in 1914 and by 1943 was used as a chicken house. Interior damaged by tidal wave in 1960. Today (1966) it stands in a ruinous state and again restoration is proposed. The original bell, cast in the United States is now hanging in the Imiola Church. Hoku Loa Church was built through inspiration of religious faith instilled in native Hawaiians by Rev. Lorenzo Lyons, an American Congregational missionary from Massachusetts, who arrived in Hawaii in July 1832 and began serving a Puako about 1835 under great handicaps of primitive life.
