Description

Merry Christmas to all my Flickr friends.

Taken in Deering Oaks Park in Portland, Maine. Colored lights decorating the trees are reflected in the small pond. There were many ducks swimming around and making their quacking noises. Not sure if they are visible here but they did show up in some others.

Duiring King William's War, Benjamin Church helped defend the British settlers on this site on September 1689 against Canadiens, and tribes of the Wabanaki Confederacy.


The City of Portland largely acquired the land from the Deering, Preble, and Fessenden families in 1879 as part of the rebuilding following the devastating 1866 fire. Deering Oaks Pond at one time filled and drained with the ocean tides; it was naturally connected to Back Cove until altered to suit roadways in the late 19th century. (Wikipedia)
