Of MATTHEW & ELIZTH. HOLWORTHY late Lord and Lady of the Manor Whose Exemplary Piety, Liberal and Extensive Charity, Probity, Humanity & Candor, were Equalled by few. To them & their Descendents whose Remains are deposited within this Dormitory, This Monument is Erected by Samuel Holworthy Esqr. ye 17th. of March 1756. MATTHEW HOLWORTHY Esqr. Only Son of Sir Matthew Holworthy of Great Palgrave in Norfolk Kt. Died ye 18th. of May 1728 Aged 54 years. Elizabeth Holworthy Relict of Matthew Holworthy Esqr. and Daughter of James Disbrowe Esqr. Doctor of Physick died ye 19th. of Augt. 1749 Aged 67 years. Matthew son of Matthew & Elizth. Holworthy died ye 4th. of June 1701 Aged 1 month. Disbrowe son of Matthew & Elizth. Holworthy died ye 22d. of May 1721 Aged 21 years. Susanna Daughter of Matthew & Elizth. Holworthy died ye 2d. of June 1721 Aged 16 years. Elizth. Heathcote Daugr. of Matthew & Elizth. Holworthy died ye 6th. of May 1726 Aged 27 years. Note that Candor has several obsolete meanings including purity and kindness. It seems unlikely that the Holworthys are being commended for their blunt outspokenness. |
