Summary edit

Description

Grade I listed

The church dates from the early 12th century onwards with later additions and alterations. Built of rubble and flint with some brick, tile and stone dressings. It consists of a western tower, nave with clerestory and north and south aisles, chancel, south chapel, and south porch. The west tower dates dates from the early 12th century, the south aisle and arcade are from the late 12th century, and the north aisle and arcade are from the early 14th century. The tower is of three stages with a west Norman doorway. Above is a bellcote with cupola containing a bell, from the 18th century. The nave has arcades of four bays, the south having circular piers and the north having octagonal piers.

The south chapel was built by the third Lord Rich in 1607, and contains a monument to Richard, 1st Lord Rich and Robert his son, in alabaster and marble with a kneeling figure (Robert Rich, died 1581) at the west end, and a reclining effigy on top of the altar tomb of Richard Rich, died 1566. He is notorious for participating in the torture of Anne Askew, the only woman to have been tortured in the Tower of London.

There is an (allegedly) Norman font, on modern supports. The church has two brasses, one is an unknown Knight in armour. In the north wall of the sanctuary are the remains of a 14th century altar tomb.

There is a two manual organ by Hill.
