English: Hope's Nose - Disused Limestone Quarry. This view gives some idea of the vast quantity of limestone which must have been extracted from here. The barges for transporting the stone would have moored along the rocks to the left of the picture. The limestone in the quarry was laid down when this land mass was south of the equator. Evidence can be found (so they say) to indicate that some of the limestone with its fossils clearly visible must have been laid down on the protected inside of the coral reef. Other limestone in the quarry indicates that with the fossils very worn they must have been on the seaward side of the coral reef and become worn or abraded and so far less distinct. Today this headland is a peaceful place much frequented by fishermen, but in the last century this would have been a hive of industrial activity. How times have changed! Now it is a part of a site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) which extends from this headland north to Wall's Hill above Long Quarry Point which itself is a disused limestone quarry. In addition this section of coast all around Torbay to the south of the bay at Berry Head is now designated by UNESCO as the English Riviera Geopark.11885601188500
