| Description |
English: Hope's Nose Limestone Quarry (disused). Different stratas of Devonian Limestone can be seen in the quarry walls. The limestone various from very broken layers at the top to massive layers of solid grey limestone at the base of the walls and in the base of the quarry - in shadow in this photo. Guide books state that this limestone, part of the South Devon 'Coral Coast', was laid down south of the equator some 350m years ago. These are the remains of coral reefs. There is evidence all over the urban area of Torquay of buildings and walls which were constructed using stone from this and similar limestone quarries. The stone from this quarry was removed on barges. 1188442 |
