Hopi matron, maiden, and small child, Arizona, ca.1898
Photograph of a Hopi matron, maiden, and small child, Arizona, ca.1898. The maiden at left wears her hair in large pinwheels at the sides of her head. Her dress is worn over one shoulder. The young matron at right wears her hair down twisted into two ponytails, one on each side. She has a blanket draped around her. A baby pokes its head out from behind her back where it is carried. Both girls are barefoot and stand before a ladder and an adobe brick wall. A broken pot sits at their feet at left.
