Horsehead Nebula IC434 and Flame Nebula NGC2024

Summary edit

Description
English: We are in the heart of the Orion constellation, near the belt. The dark nebula IC 434, also known as the Horsehead, is an object that is about 1500 light years away from Earth, and has a radius of about 3.5 light years. These objects are among the coldest known in the field of astrophysics, and are of particular interest regarding the star formation process. The high density of gas, combined with the pressure of the outer layers and low temperatures, creates the conditions for a "gravitational collapse", which generates new stars surrounded by their protoplanetary disks.

To the left of the Horsehead, the Flame Nebula is clearly visible, cataloged as NGC 2024. Right above it, the star Alnitak shines, which together with Alnilam and Mintaka (not visible in this shot) forms the Hunter's Belt.
