Description
English: c/n 31

Built in 1944 at Göttingen One of a series of experimental ‘flying-wing’ research gliders built by Horten, which ultimately led to the H.IX jet-powered fighter/bomber prototype, otherwise known as the Ho229 or Go229. The H.III h is believed to have originally been built as a two-seat H.III g, but was then modified to a single-seater with test equipment in place of the second seat. Although exact details of its flight tests are not known, it is believed that some of the test equipment fitted was for measuring angle-of-attack and yaw. It was shipped to the United States as a complete aircraft after the end of WW2 and was allocated the Foreign Evaluation identity FE-5039, which was later changed to T2-5039. Its remains came to the Smithsonian Institute in 1966 and are seen on display in the Steven F. Udvar Hazy Center as part of the National Air and Space Museum.
